A new addition to the clinic is the use of Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), an evidence-based approach to pain education, mindfulness, and somatic tracking (being aware of physical sensations that no longer need to be interpreted as danger signals). Dr David Bowler incorporates these insights into his counselling for patients with physical and emotional pain, anxiety and past trauma. It can be used as a stand-alone technique or combined with CBT and clinical hypnosis as well as other psychotherapeutic modalities. You can read more about the approach at the Pain Reprocessing Therapy Center . This therapy was described in a ground-breaking clinical study of patients with chronic back pain published in JAMApsychiatry. ![]()
Alan Gordon LCSW, author of The Way Out and developer of Pain Reprocessing Therapy has set up a 21 day program you can access online free of charge that can introduce you to the PRT principles.
This program overlaps with some of the information available on his podcast, "Tell Me About Your Pain" on iOS and Google and in the Facebook groups Tell Me About Your Pain Community and Tell Me About Your Pain (Pain Psychology Center).
