Around our clinic building is the start of a medicinal garden. Inspired by gardens in England and the medicinal garden at Bastyr in Seattle, along with historical tales of Brother Cadfael's herbarium from a long gone era, we recognize the studies of bygone botanists and healers in addition to recent discoveries in the field of healing plants. Many have heard of the pain relieving effects of willowbark, an early form of aspirin, or the stronger pain-killer - poppy juice - or perhaps foxglove's digitalis for heart rhythm disturbances and feverfew for migraine just to name a few. More recently yew trees have been used for cancer treatments and galantamine (from snowdrops) for dementia. The list goes on! We hope to showcase a few of these hard-working botanical wonders in our own little medicinal garden. |
