Arthrosamid is a hydrogel injection into the knee joint which can last for up to 5 years.
As of 2025, it is new to Canada but has been used for years in Europe with good success.
It is not currently covered by extended health plans but must be paid for privately.
It has an excellent safety record over 10 years.
It is injected under sterile precautions after a local anaesthetic numbs the knee.
You will need to take an antibiotic prescription 1 - 2 hours prior to the injection, as Arthrosamid is regarded as an implant due to its long-lasting effects.
The hydrogel embeds itself into the synovial lining of the knee over about a 4 month period, and this provides on-going physical protection to the knee, as well as showing anti-inflammatory effects which aid healing.
The best results are seen in the following patients:
Confirmed osteoarthritis of the knee (early arthritic knees do better than later stages of arthritis)
Those who are either too young or unwilling to have knee replacement surgery
Patients with an effusion (excess joint fluid in the knee)
Chronic inflammation
Patients under 70
There is an 80% success rate in under 70 years
There is a 63% success rate in those over 70 years
Any treatment has a percentage of failures but this is a very promising, safe and effective treatment for those suffering from knee arthritis.
