Medical Acupuncture
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the Ancient Chinese art of using very fine needles into specific sites on the body (acupuncture points, which run along different meridians or pathways). Medical Acupuncture is performed by physicians rather than TCM practitioners and is mostly used for the treatment of pain.
What effect do the needles have?
The needles can be stimulated by hand or with low voltage electricity similar to a TENS machine. Even with no stimulus, the effect of the needles causes the body to produce healing substances such as endorphins and encephalins, providing natural healing and pain relief.
Is it painful?
Acupuncture does involve the insertion of needles, but they are very fine as they are not used to inject substances into the body. They are solid needles and are the "thinnest" of all our needles, and therefore the least painful. Most people "enjoy" having acupuncture as it is such a gentle treatment.
What can I expect after acupuncture?
Acupuncture often gives an all-round reduction in the intensity of pain, along with a feeling of well-being, relaxation, and it is very effective for relieving nausea, anxiety and other symptoms accompanying pain.
How many treatments will I need?
A series of treatments is most often needed, should you choose acupuncture for pain relief. Sometimes it takes several treatments to see if you are going to respond to this modality.
Is the cost covered by MSP?
No. You will be billed privately but sometimes third party insurers will reimburse a percentage to you. We will issue you with a receipt.
How should I prepare for my visit?
It is best to have a light meal or snack prior to coming. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a hair tie if you have long hair. Enjoy the relaxation it brings and don't plan anything too energetic afterwards.
